The Memetic Mechanics of Advertising

Advertising has become an integral part or society. There are various methods that advertisements utilize in order to get the public to become aware of it. It can also be said, to some extent, that advertising has taken on a memetic quality, being found just about any place imaginable from billboards, print ads, television to even cyberspace. But we are left asking several questions, just how has this been done, what is being done now and how will it continue to grow and evolve. For my final project, I will attempt to explore the mechanics of advertising and how the concepts of memes are used. I will also explore memes that have become to some extent self-aware.

Using several texts from people such as Susan Blackmore, Thorsten Botz-Bornstein Iain, MacRury, and Ron Beasly, as well as journal articles from online databases, I will use a combination of information and close reading of excerpts from these sources to construct justify my argument of advertisements being a type of meme. For my video portion, I will gather various advertisements that I will mention and will construct a short vocal narrative to explain various points made in my paper. When finished, I hope to gain a better understanding of my topic as well as media and its place in society.

1) Memes and social mediation: looking at the history of memes, semiotics etc. and how they have affect social interactions, using several varieties of memes as a structure of both the paper and video

2) Surveillance and voyeurism and effect of society (following similar strategy as #1)

3) New technology and new media (looking at Lev Manovich and his take on it, as well as others.

We live in a time were technology is advancing at an alarming rate. In terms of communication and media technology, there is something new coming out almost every couple months, such as personal media players, instant messaging, emails, sending text messages via cellular phones to web cameras and video conferencing. With all of this new technology, two question arises: are we becoming more connected or are we slowly becoming less and less connected with one another and how do these new technologies affect how we relate to the world around us?

I would say that the situation takes a little from both sides. On one hand, these new technologies have allowed people to do things and communicate like never before. We use as a form of entertainment by putting it into televisions, computer and gaming systems, to create new and innovative things like movies and works of are and as a means to communicate with someone next door, or in another country. On the other hand, new technology has affected our relationships with the outside world. One affect of this is that we have become increasingly reliant of them to the point that if we were to lose our phones, Ipods or computers, it is very likely that we would not know what to do without them. Another is that we have become comfortable with not doing anything but being able to have access to everything for example; we do not even have to leave our house to rent a movie. With the click of a mouse we can have access to any movie we could possibly want.

New technology has also raised the bar in how work gets done and what is expected of students. With all of the new programs out and computers to put them on, we are made to do things that probably were impossible to do without years of skill and teaching. With programs like Final Cut Pro for example, anybody in a matter of days can learn basic editing skills that would allow him or her to explore and learn even more about making movies.

We are left asking ourselves will we be able to find the balance between our usages of technology or will we permanently be attached to it. Who is exactly to blame for this, is it the large corporations or is it our own impressionable nature to take something that supposedly makes things easier and make it our sole means of working and communicating with a world we have become increasingly detached from.

Video Meaning

In doing the video O Fortuna Crash Remix 2009, I used found footage of the Challenger explosion and put it to clips of O Fortuna as well as various sounds. One of them was the classic clip known as the Wilhem Scream. It was then that I realized that I was doing something bigger than just putting things together and making them work. I then went back in my mind and thought about all of the tragic events I have seen and one phrase stuck out of my mind: It’s like something out of a movie.

I feel that when something bad happens, like buildings being destroyed or, in this case, space shuttles exploding mid flight, we are not exposed to it just one time, we are bombarded so many times with the same images or the same clips that it comes to a point where it no longer holds as much impact as it once did. Just like when a movie is shown too many times. In some cases, music is played in the background, only enforcing its cinematic quality. So by adding my own soundtrack to a tragic event, I parodied the way we are exposed to events such as this.

My Meme-mory

If i were to choose a meme, I would have to be a little song some may have heard of circa 1996 called the Macarena. what started as a song by los de rio, was taken and given a flashy and trendy new look to match the 90′s dance craze. not only was the song infectious, but so was the dance, which took no time at all to learn. for your viewing pleasure, take a look at this

here is the animated approach, circa late 1990′s. this then popular dance and song was taken and reworked in the hit animated show Animaniacs. By doing this, another outlet was reached, the children of the world.

Here it exists as a memory and as a way to quell the inmates of this maximum security prison. the sight of all the inmates dancing in unison perfectly display a memes primary characteristic: to be reproduced by duplication.

What made this such a successful meme at the time was how wide spread it was. you could not change the radio without running into it being played in heavy rotation. It was also at every summer party. there were also so many variations and mixes, that once you thought it was all over, another version took its place, with nowhere to hide from it, kind of like a VIRUS of some sort. Hmmm

Effective Culture Jams

Here are two that I found that are effective Culture Jams.what both of these do is address issues such as overindulgence and what can it is no resolved. Adding insult to injury, both have taken the trademark symbols and presented them in a much darker way that they would have been seen originally. in both of these, I find nothing that would make it and ineffective jam. The only way that they could be better would be to somehow put them in areas where a wide audience would see them or where people buy these products (i.e. restaurants and corner stores)
